If your business name was registered in a state or territory before 28 May 2012, you do not need to do anything until it is time to renew your business name. Your business name will be automatically transferred to the national register, provided it is not subject to an appeal or other outstanding matters.
If you have a question about a business name transaction that was in progress before 28 May 2012, you will need to contact the state or territory agency that the transaction commenced with. This may include a:
business name registration application
registration or renewal payment, or
business name appeal.
ASIC cannot process payments, renewals or any other transaction commenced by a state or territory agency.
Record of registration
If you are an existing business name holder – who held a registered business name with a state or territory before 28 May 2012 – we will issue a record of registration on your first business name renewal. For new business name holders, we will issue this to the business email address on registration.
There is no legal requirement for you to display this record. However, you will need to display your business name prominently in every location that is open to the public.
If you require evidence of your business name registration, you can do a free online search of our business names index using ASIC Connect. This will provide a summary of your business name details, which you can view and/or print as a PDF. You may also wish to purchase a business name extract, which may include more information. In some instances this will include the same details as available in the free summary.
